Letters From South Sudan
Beginning in 2005, after decades of civil war in South Sudan, bishops of that country invited international religious communities to consider serving in South Sudan. Since that point, members of men’s and women’s congregations have been committed to a presence to support the church through the collaborative project, Solidarity with South Sudan, which prepares and supports people to respond to the immense needs there in health care, agriculture, education and parish ministry. Other religious congregations are also serving Sudanese people by sponsoring independent projects.
Letters from South Sudan - With other conflicts making the news across the globe, not much is visible in the headlines from South Sudan, though unrest continues to create dire needs for the vulnerable there. In the last two days several news reports have surfaced about fears of famine for the people of South Sudan.
A message of solidarity, peace and hope to the people of South Sudan, from the Religious Superiors Association of South Sudan - The 75 representatives of 29 Catholic Religious Congregations belonging to the RSASS issue a statement against violence in the country and call for a new solidarity of peace, in the wake of thousands dead and a million people displaced.
This week’s letter comes from Immaculate Heart of Mary Sr. Joan Mumaw, Solidarity with South Sudan’s development director, who offers a reflection on the recent peace agreement between the rebel forces and the government and the present situation team members are facing as they work to teach and offer healthcare.
With fears that the situation in South Sudan is disappearing from the front pages of newspapers, the United Nations released a press statement yesterday appearing on U.N. News Centre about the desperate need for relief in the most remote areas of the country still affected by violence.
