Communion and culture wars: Is there a better way?

Horizons - How can we as the church listen better, disagree better, and quite honestly, give a more credible witness in a hurting world? As I ponder this question and others, two moments rise to the top of my memory.

Good Friday, good grief

This Palm Sunday, true to form, my attention drifted as the Passion was proclaimed. However, as the narrator recounted Jesus' return to his dozing disciples after a period of intense prayer, my ears perked up at a line I'd never noticed before: "He found them sleeping from grief."

Resolved to make no more resolutions

I've never been very good at New Year's resolutions, and I know I'm not alone. Like many people, my resolutions tend to be self-serving, fairly unattainable and quickly broken. In an age in which even rest and leisure have become to-do list material, perhaps this is the year to ditch the resolutions.

The call to community

Most of us carry a longing for belonging. We long to be part of, to create, and to extend something we recognize that far too many in our world lack — authentic community.
